6. CONNECTION MATTERS
Pillar 5: Social Connection
Your relationships have as much impact on your surgical recovery as your fitness, nutrition, and sleep. Not metaphorically. Measurably.
Patients with strong social support recover faster, have fewer complications, experience less pain, and report better mental health post-operatively.
This is biology. Humans are social creatures. Connection affects our immune function, our stress hormones, our inflammation levels, our resilience.

Why Connection Is Medicine
Immune Function
Loneliness increases inflammation and suppresses immune response. Feeling supported and connected actually strengthens your immunity.
Stress Hormones & Pain
Feeling cared for lowers cortisol. You're less stressed going into surgery.

Mental Health
Strong social connection is protective against post-operative depression. Isolated patients are at higher risk.
